Steve is really going to be missed. Can’t imagine a single day where I couldn’t use the products that his company have created.
I wasn’t sure where to post this comment to your previous blog on applying evidence based practices. As a former health care worker I couldn’t agree with you more that most staff are not educated on the true definition of addiction. Our hospitals are frequently understaffed and lack proper education to treat and manage long term addiction. In my experience I have seen patients come into ER for relapse after relapse due to misdiagnosis of acute care. Too often we are trained off of protocol and over look the level of chronic care needed. I hope we can begin to develop higher education standards to better treat addiction and bridge the gap between patient centered care and addiction management.
Lisa, thanks for the comment! We need significant change in our healthcare system to address addiction. I have always believed good, hard-working people, caring people who work in healthcare are not the problem, but it is the system in which they work that requires change. Our challenge is rethinking the “system” and how to alter it to embrace the idea that we must screen, refer, and treat this pervasive problem.

“Life was mad up by people no smarter then you”. Wow this quote really hit home with me. At the moment I have been going through a difficult time. I want to better myself and my community and sometimes have people bringing me down. By listening to this quote a few times I realized that I don’t need to live my life in a box. If people want to live in a box that is fine but it doesn’t mean that I have to. I need to think more positively in my life and remind myself that I can do anything. I need to remind myself not to be so hard on myself. I am a smart young woman and can change the world I live in.
