Hello, and thanks for checking out the site!
I’m the one who created and has nurtured this site since 2001. It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade, but there has never been a shortage of people struggling with addiction in need of help.
For almost half of my life I have been actively involved in counseling, teaching, consulting and doing research on addiction, and I’m proud that it has become a central focus of my life’s work.
For those interested in my credentials, I’m a psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Certified Addiction Specialist, with a master’s degree in counseling psychology and a doctoral degree in systems science and social psychology.
- On Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Sciences University
- Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Systems Science Graduate Program at Portland State University.
- Member of the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders.
For those of you who want the real skinny on my background, I’m also someone who wrestles with addiction. By nature I am obsessive, compulsive, driven by habit, and in various aspects of my life extreme. I have numerous family members who have died from their addictions, one who committed suicide, and many friends who have also walked the tenuous path of addiction problems.
Since my early twenties I have engaged in all kinds of treatments and therapies, and learned from experience how and why they work. I don’t believe you have to personally struggle with addiction to help others, but my personal experiences have clearly influenced the development of the 5 Actions, so I wanted you to know that.
While I have learned a lot that I want to share with you, I will be the first to admit I don’t have all the answers. Anyone who tells you they do is selling you snake oil.
If we had all the answers addiction wouldn’t be among our most challenging public health problems today! That said, I believe some answers are better than others, and I hope you spend some time exploring the material on this site and deciding for yourself whether my approach makes sense.
Outside of my addiction work I am interested in lifestyle, travel, faith and photography, topics which are explored on my personal website: www.3inNYC.com.
